Today’s post (based on a true story) runs through the process of working with a client to find their perfect business logo. While some small business owners have a very specific image in mind of what the end result will look like, there are many who don’t. Not for lack of caring, but lets face it, creativity is not always an inherent trait.
The Client – Jordan Lloyd – Small Business Owner – Grande Prairie Alberta
After a very brief consultation it was decided that, aside from a colour scheme, he was not quite sure what would work. So it was off to the drawing board. When creating a first draft, I like to get client feedback right away. Before tweaking small details, I will send the custom logo draft to them for review. This allows the chance to find out if I am on the right track, or in some cases if I have it all wrong.
Draft 1: Client Requirements – Font Based Logo of Red, Black and/or Gold.
I wanted to impart the feeling of a structure “Building” within the font.
At first glance I was quite happy with the result. But upon closer review realized that the ‘brick’ detail was perhaps not the best fit for a contractor working mostly with wood products. So back to the board I went. The second draft logo would be more simple and eye-catching.
Simple clean lines with a theme that fit. This logo would be available in multiple colours and easily adjusted. This is where things get tricky. The client liked the second option but was still more attracted to 3D aspect and details in the first. My instinct – to combine the favoured elements from both custom logos to find a better fit.
The third option utilized the same colour scheme and 3D options as the first, partnered with the crisp clean feel of the second. Take a look.
Choosing a custom designed business logo can often feel like being in a candy store. There are a lot of options that look really great, but OH How to Make a Choice! I’ll keep you posted on Jordan’s final decision for his company logo. It’s always a bit like Christmas waiting to see what the final product will be. Stay Tuned!
